About

BackyardPlayWise.com is about play equipment in your own yard: trampolines, swing sets and playsets, climbing frames and domes, playhouses and sandboxes, the surfacing that goes underneath them, and the games that fill an afternoon. A backyard is not a public park and not a commercial play centre, and the buying decision is different too. You are working with the space you have, the ages you have, and a budget that has to cover the ground prep as well as the structure.

Safety comes first in every guide, and we are specific about where the numbers come from. Fall height, use zones, how deep loose fill has to be and which age a piece of equipment is meant for are all set out in the Consumer Product Safety Commission handbooks, and when we quote a figure we say which publication it came from so you can check it yourself. If we cannot find a number at the source, we leave it out and point you to the source rather than inventing one that sounds about right.

Our approach in the guides is to start with the problem rather than the product. Whether that is a trampoline that shifts in the wind, mulch that keeps washing into the lawn, or a swing set the kids outgrew in two summers, we explain what is actually going on before we point at anything you can buy. Understanding the cause first is the cheapest way to avoid the wrong purchase.

We are also clear about where our guidance stops. Permits, setback distances from property lines, fencing requirements and what your homeowners association allows are decided by your county and your association, and they vary enormously. We tell you to check them; we do not tell you what they say. Anything structural, from anchoring to a deck attachment to a concrete footing, is a question for the manufacturer instructions and a qualified installer.

We do not install equipment, run a test yard or put products through a laboratory, and we do not pretend otherwise. Our guidance draws on CPSC publications, published manufacturer specifications and the patterns that repeat across owners, with your own yard, your own ground and your own kids as the final word. We keep prices out of the written guides because they move constantly and vary by region; the current price is always on the retailer page.
